Safety Tips

Every tool is safe in careful hands. Before any job, take one minute to check your tool, your workspace and yourself. A safe habit today can save you from an injury tomorrow.

For Every Tool

  • Read the manufacturer's manual before you use any tool for the first time.
  • Wear the right protective gear: safety glasses, gloves where suitable, hearing protection, a dust mask and strong closed shoes.
  • Check the tool before every use. Look for cracks, loose parts, worn handles and damaged cords.
  • Use the right tool for the right job, and never use a tool for something it was not made to do.
  • Keep your work area clean, dry and well lit, and keep children and pets away.
  • Stay calm and focused. Never rush, and never work when you are tired or feeling drowsy.
  • Clean your tools and store them safely after every job.

Hand Tools

  • Choose the correct size. A tool that does not fit slips, and a slip causes injuries.
  • Never use a screwdriver as a chisel or a pry bar.
  • Replace hammers and tools that have loose heads or cracked handles.
  • Cut and carve away from your body, and keep blades sharp because dull blades slip.
  • Pull a wrench towards you instead of pushing, and keep your balance.
  • Carry sharp tools with the point down and never keep them loose in your pocket.

Power Tools

  • Unplug the tool or remove the battery before changing a bit, blade or disc.
  • Clamp your work firmly so it cannot move while you cut or drill.
  • Keep all guards in place and hold the tool with both hands when the job needs it.
  • Avoid loose clothes and jewellery, and tie back long hair.
  • Let the tool reach full speed and do the work. Do not force it.
  • Keep the cord away from the cutting edge and never carry a tool by its cord.
  • Wait until the moving part stops completely before you put the tool down.

Electrical

  • Treat every wire as live until you have tested it.
  • Switch off the power at the main breaker and confirm it is off with a tester before you touch anything.
  • Never work with wet hands, on a wet floor or near water.
  • Use insulated tools and throw away damaged plugs, cords and extension leads.
  • Do not overload sockets or extension boards.
  • Use a safety switch (RCD or GFCI) where possible.
  • Leave fixed wiring and the main board to a licensed electrician.

Automotive

  • Park on firm, level ground, apply the handbrake and block the wheels.
  • Never trust a jack alone. Always support the vehicle with proper jack stands.
  • Let the engine cool down before you touch the exhaust, radiator or coolant.
  • Disconnect the battery before electrical work, and keep sparks and flames away from fuel and the battery.
  • Work in an open or well-ventilated place because exhaust fumes can be deadly.
  • Keep hands, hair and clothing away from belts, fans and moving parts.
  • Dispose of used oil and fluids in the proper way.

Household Tools

  • Place a ladder on level ground and keep three points of contact with it at all times.
  • Check the wall for hidden pipes and wires before you drill or hammer.
  • Keep tools in a toolbox, out of the reach of children.
  • Cut away from your hands and change blunt or broken blades quickly.
  • Read the label on glues, paints and cleaners, and open a window while you use them.
  • Keep a first-aid kit at home and know where it is.

If you get hurt, stop work and get medical help. Work slowly, stay alert and go home safe.
